Κάθε σελίδα σου δίνει την αίσθηση ότι μπορεί να εκρφράσει με λόγια αυτό που πάντα σκεφτόσουν αλλά ποτέ δεν ήξερες πως να αποτυπώσεις με λέξεις. Ακόμα, πρόκειται για μια νοερή περιπλάνηση στην Αθήνα του 1930 που σε γεμίζει νσταλγία αλλά και όρεξη για ζωή. Ο τρόπος γραφής μπορεί να είναι λίγο δυσνόητος κάποιες φορές λόγο της ποιητικότητας του αλλά είναι κάτι διαφορετικό που αξίζει να το προσπαθήσει κανείς και να ξεκλειδώσει χιλιάδες συναισθήματα.

   In the story，Tianbao and Nuosong，sons of Shunshun，the boat owner，both fell in love with Cuicui，granddaughter of the old boatman.  Knowing that Cuicui had given her heart to Nuosong，Tianbao quit voluntarily. Shortly after that, he was killed in a boat accident on his way to Chenzhou. Saddened by the grievous news，Nuosong left home and went to Taoyuan. After her grandfather’s gloomy death，Cuicui kept waiting at the ferry for the return of Nuosong.“He might never return，or he may return tomorrow!”Instead of delving into the tragic connotation of the love story，the writer aims at creating a poetic pastoral eclogue and at depicting the beautiful heart and interpersonal harmony of the rural people. Under his pen，Cuicui is characterized as the incarnation of “love” and”beauty”;the old boatman as plain and honest ;Tianbao as lenient and magnanimous ;Nuosong as the embodiment of love and affection ;and Shunshun as outright and generous，all of whom are depicted as symbols of excellent virtues.  With thick ink and rich color，the writer draws a beautiful landscape of western Hunan Province and creates a vivid portrayal of the pure and honest local customs. Brief introduction

 The title is based on a French proverb:Marriage is like a fortress besieged: those who are outside want to get in, and those who are inside want to get out. The novel is known for its acerbic asides, such as describing one young lady in the following way:At first, they called her “truth” because “the truth is naked”. But then, she’s not actually completely naked. So they amended it to “partial-truth”.
    The novel was published in Shanghai in 1947. The second edition was published 1948. The third edition in 1949. After the Communist Revolution, the book was not printed again in mainland China until 1980. In the mean time, it was also banned in Taiwan because of its satire of the Nationalist government.
    The novel has been translated into many languages. These include the Russian version which appeared in 1979, the American English version in 1979; and the German version in 1982.

 

Why you should read it:

     The book was begun while Qian Zhongshu and wife Yang Jiang were living in Shanghai during the Japanese occupation. According to Yang Jiang, the successful production of several of her plays inspired Qian to write a full length novel.The novel was begun in 1944, and completed in 1946. Much of the characters and plot are taken from the experiences of Qian and Yang abroad and in China. For example, the opening scene at sea reflects their journey from France to China onboard the ship Athos II.

Brief introduction

Wuthering Heights is Emily Brontë’s only novel. It was first published in 1847 under the pseudonym Ellis Bell, and a posthumous second edition was edited by her sister Charlotte. The name of the novel comes from the Yorkshire manor on the moors on which the story centres. (As an adjective, wuthering is a Yorkshire word referring to turbulent weather.) The narrative tells the tale of the all-encompassing and passionate, yet thwarted love between Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw, and how this unresolved passion eventually destroys both themselves and many around them.

 

Why you should read it:
     Now considered a classic of English literature, Wuthering Heights’s innovative structure, which has been likened to a series of Matryoshka dolls, met with mixed reviews by critics when it first appeared. Though Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre was originally considered the best of the Brontë sisters’ works, many subsequent critics of Wuthering Heights argued that its originality and achievement made it superior. Wuthering Heights has also given rise to many adaptations and inspired works, including films, radio, television demonstration, musicals and songs (notably the hit Wuthering Heights by Kate Bush) and opera.

Brief introduction

A Tale of Two Cities (1859) is a novel by Charles Dickens, set in London and Paris before and during the French Revolution. With well over 200 million copies sold, it ranks among the most famous works in the history of fictional literature.[2]
    The novel depicts the plight of the French peasantry demoralized by the French aristocracy in the years leading up to the revolution, the corresponding brutality demonstrated by the revolutionaries toward the former aristocrats in the early years of the revolution, and many unflattering social parallels with life in London during the same time period. It follows the lives of several protagonists through these events. The most notable are Charles Darnay and Sydney Carton. Darnay is a French once-aristocrat who falls victim to the indiscriminate wrath of the revolution despite his virtuous nature, and Carton is a dissipated British barrister who endeavours to redeem his ill-spent life out of his unrequited love for Darnay’s wife, Lucie Manette.
    The 45-chapter novel was published in 31 weekly installments in Dickens’ new literary periodical titled All the Year Round. From April 1859 to November 1859, Dickens also republished the chapters as eight monthly sections in green covers. Dickens’ previous novels had appeared only as monthly installments. The first weekly installment of A Tale of Two Cities ran in the first issue of All the Year Round on 30 April 1859.

Ο ιδιαίτερος τρόπος γραφής του Ξενόπουλου στη δημοτική της Ζακύνθου τέλη 19ου αρχες 20ου αιώνα, η ειδυλλιακή ατμόσφαιρα και η κλιμακώμενη ένταση του δράματος οδηγούν με θαυμαστό τρόπο στην κορύφωση του δράματος.

Ο έρωτας του Σπύρου και της Όρσας θα καταδικαστεί όταν η Μίνα θα την παντρέψει, χωρίς τη θέλησή της ίδιας, με τον καπετάνιο Βατοκούζη. Όταν όμως ο Μαλταμπές αποκτήσει κι αυτός τον τίτλο του καπετάνιου θα του δώσει την άλλη της κόρη, τη Μόσχα, με αποτελέσματα που κανείς τους δεν μπόρεσε να προβλέψει.

Έχοντας ως πυρήνα τον έρωτα των δύο νέων η Ιωάννα Καρυστιάνη σκιαγραφεί, χρησιμοποιώντας ιδιαίτερη και ιδιάζουσα γλώσσα, τόσο τις κοινωνικές συνθήκες και συνήθειες της εποχής όσο και τις αλλαγές που επέφερε ο πόλεμος στις ζωές των κατοίκων του νησιού ο Β’ Παγκόσμιος Πόλεμος.
